Recommendations for artists supported under the NDIS

On of my current roles is the
Queensland State Representative for
Supported Studio Network

A supported Studio Supports professional
artists with disabilities
in the production and sale of their artwork.

Like all areas and changes under the
National Disability Insurance Scheme
the arts and disability sector is scrambling
to get ready as the rollouts begin.

Currently there are no specific guidelines
with the NDIA for what can be funded.

We know things like art supplies and
Tertiary Studies will not be funded
but the rest is unclear.

We also know that the support needs of
someone pursuing art as a hobby are
very different to a professional artist.

When you write your plan and
meet with you planner be very clear on
what you art goal is.

Do not write 'I want to do art'

Write I want support to sell my art in
a professional gallery.

to do this I need support to:

Produce my artwork
an art mentor or PA
support to work with the gallery
support to deliver and collect my work.

Otherwise you may only be funded to
attend a 3 hour art group with a service
provider a week. Of course that may be all
you require.

Each service provider will be asked to
quote you a unit price for the type of
support you require.
So ask for the right support you need.

Many supported studios are yet to
workout these costs, while genetic
services in your area may be further
along.  All providers must make unit pricing
clear and available before you decided.

It is the role of the Support Studio Network
to assist art studios with these changes.
Bear in mind you will need to pay for your
own art supples under the NDIS if you
are selling your work.

I find it concerning that this information
is only emerging. If you need any advice
contact the accessible arts body in your state.

ArtISability will have information booklets
out soon.

The NDIS and the challenges before us

THE CHANGING ARTS LANDSCAPE

This week I've been exploring funding models, opportunities and how the NDIS will change the landscape for artists living with disabilities across Australia, The introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme affects me as an individual artists and the Supported Studio Network framework in which I work.

A supported studio engages professional artist by providing space to produce work, support to exhibit the work and opportunities to sell their work. In preparation for the introduction of the NDIS artists living with disabilities need to begin to have discussions with their support circle about their artistic goals. Saying I want to do art will not be enough to ensure you obtain the support you need.
/

Support Studio Ne1twork recommends you classify what type of artists you are and how you need the NDIA to support you.

Classification

  1. Hobbyist/beginner- you wish to pursue art as a hobby or for your own enjoyment. You could do this by asking to attend a day centre with a decatated art program or one on one support to attend an established art group.
  2. Artists in training- someone who is acquiring skills to enable them to become a profession Artists
  3. Emerging Artists - Someone who has completed their training and wants to build their artistic skills. You may chose to join a supported studio to achieve this.
  4. Professional Artists or Arts worker - You've been working in the field for some time.

The NDIS is about you
and what you want to achieve.

The NDIS will not support everyone with a disability or those with tempory disability, mental illness or chronic illness, however the NDIS is not the only way to continue to fund you artistic goals, nor will it cover all your art supplies and training, You will continue to need to apply for individual arts funding to advance your art dreams.

I will address these in upcoming posts.

At play

my legs move the swing higher
as children await . . .
big kids on our swings

mean while we spot a group
with a ball determine it
should not land on the sand.

Stubbed by perhaps a creative one
a rebel plotted herself in sand.
to create a master piece.

a stroll down the track . .
coffee to be found
as the children play.

Temptation draws us in
watching youth stomp
on water springing from the ground.

Shall we dance ...
followed by images of me
looking like a drowned rat!

Howls begin to follow
coming from a small princess
as we wander across the track.

The werewolf sounds,
its almost dark. . .
images appear on walls.

Alleys filled with detailed pics,
Street art coats its walls,
darkness calls princess home.

Howling comes to rest,
we join the boys at the pub,
sipping on our wine.

Cheers to what tomorrow brings.

On the soap box

Intolerance

Intolerance has replaced understanding,

in a world centred around me and my rights,

life has become all about me comfort levels,

my right to feel safe and secure.

Intolerance means those who don't have what I do,

haven't earn it or obtain rights by illegally,

it doesn't recognise we were born equally

or we all have the same human basic rights.

Intolerance implies superiority,

my status is the correct one,

my way of life more important,

devaluing others.

Intolerance ends the need for compassion,

fails to admit mistakes and wrong doing,

makes it OK to pass judgements on others,

leading to a break down is social justice.

Intolerance breaths arrogance and self righteousness,

it ends the need to any social responsibility,

or need for social inclusion of others,

it feeds fear and insecurities.

Deb's Soap Box

The bubble!
Life is lived from the safety of a bubble,
We can see and very the world,
Chose information we want to filter,
Select opions and media reports to adopt,
Without examining the truth for ourselves.

The safety of our bubble is all about us!
Our safety,
Our fears,
Our rights,
Our prilivages.

Our world and perceptions protected,
My believes, values, standard and morals,
In cased  by the invisible bubble,
Pretending to myself the world matters,
As long as it doesn't intrude into my bubble.

It hides the need of objectivity,
The importance to hear all arguments,
The need to question information resources,
And removes the need for personal experience.
In the bubble my ego is all that counts.

The bubble precedes the need to
Reach out and experienced the world for ourselves,
'The world' come to us . . .
Through screens . . . TV, Google, Facebook and email,
Filter by the bubble we create for ourselves.

The bubble is based on our really and needs,
Reality itself has no place,
My reality overrides all truth.
I am right - don't question me.
My safety dependent in on the bubble I created.
